What is MBCD?
MBCD is a computerized system aimed at helping you choose your career or field of study. During the interaction with MBCD you will be requested to respond to questions regarding your career-related aspirations and preferences.

Your responses will be compared with the system's database, which contains information on occupations' characteristics, or factors. This comparison enables MBCD to locate those occupations that are compatible with your preferences. As your dialogue with MBCD progresses, you will become acquainted with the various stages that comprise the career decision-making process as well as with an array of career factors that are relevant to this process. When entering each stage, the system will present an explanation of that stage's aim and a description of your role in it.

How can MBCD help me?
MBCD can help you decide what to study or what career to choose.

• If you are deliberating among a number of careers or educational alternatives -- you may find that some of them are not compatible with your preferences, whereas others, that you have not considered beforehand, do suit your preferences.

• If you are considering a specific career direction, but you are not certain about your choice -- you will be able to either obtain support for your choice or receive suggestions of other potential alternatives.

• If you have no direction yet -- you will be able to receive a concise list of occupations, careers, and majors that are compatible with your career-related preferences that are important to you.

MBCD will guide you, step-by-step, through a systematic career decision-making process. MBCD enables you to reach a better decision, and save time and expenses that are often the result of an inappropriate choice.

Why should I use MBCD?
Choosing a career is a very important decision because we pay both a psychological and an economical price for wrong decisions. When the loss of potential income is also taken into account, one year at college or at university can be very expensive. A psychological price is also paid, in the form of frustration and dissatisfaction with one's field of study. Therefore, it is worthwhile to invest time and thought when deciding what and where to study.

Studies that have examined users' feedback after use of MBCD have found that:

• Users' career-related decision-making difficulties have been greatly reduced;
• Users reported that they will recommend MBCD to a friend, who is about to make a career decision; and
• Interaction was perceived as interesting and the users benefited from the process.

The importance of the interaction with MBCD in facilitating the career-decision-making process has been widely recognized also by career counselors. The interaction with MBCD is now part of the counseling process in many private and public career-counseling centers.

What is the interaction with MBCD like?
There are three stages in MBCD.In the First Stage you will be asked to choose occupation factors you find important in making a career decision, and to rank them according to their importance to you. An optional worksheet is available to assist you with this stage.

In the Second Stage you will be asked to indicate your preferences for each of the important factors, and the system will eliminate occupations that are incompatible with your preferences. In the Third Stage, after being presented with a short list of "promising" occupations compatible with your preferences, you will be able to do any of the following:

• Ask "Why Not?" about a specific "Occupation Not on Your List" - that is, ask why it was eliminated.
• Locate "Occupations Almost on Your List" - that is, occupations that were eliminated from the list due to one small discrepancy with your preferences.
• View detailed occupation information.
• Print a Summary of your MBCD session.

How long does it take?
The initial interaction usually takes 60-90 minutes to complete, depending on your personal pace. There are several options available to help you verify the results and continue your research. You have access to the system for 90 days so you can return multiple times.

What occupation factors are used?
In MBCD, there are 28 factors often used in selecting occupations. These are not the only factors you will want to consider, but they represent factors important to many people and for which a computerized sorting tool can be helpful. The MBCD Worksheet contains a list of the factors and their definitions.
